Missing Marshall Woman Found

Hysteria swept through the community on the eve of the August 6th state elections. Many people set up all night with guns in hands, waiting for a potential revolt from the slaves that never came.

One woman on a farm near Marshall, after hearing a firearm discharge, was so frightened that she was about to be seized by slaves and northern Abolitionists that she ran into the woods and hid. When her husband returned from his business, he finally found her miles from home the next day in a “wretched condition.”

There are reports that women and children are “almost confirmed maniacs” because of their fear of a potential insurrection.1
