At the end of July a slave burned a stable and kitchen and confessed to the act, “without shipping.” He said two white men told him that if he burned the town they would carry him to Mexico. The slave was tried and hanged on July 30, before a mass meeting.

Two men in Robertson County named Boardwright were found guilty of “tampering with the slaves” and were hanged on Sunday, September 9th.1

Slaves accused a white man named Cawley of inciting them to revolt. Citizens brought him before the vigilante committee in Caddo. “Some were in favor of hanging, others banishing. The rope was placed around his neck and all was ready for a swing, when those opposed to this method of disposing of him prevailed and he was released with the positive order to immediately leave the country.”2
