Lynching of William H. Crawford
On July 17 th the “body of a man by the name of William H. Crawford” as found “suspended to a pecan tree, about three-quarters of a mile from town [ Fort Worth]. A large number of persons visited the body during the day. At a meeting of the citizens the same evening strong evidence was adduced, proving him to have been an abolitionist. The meeting endorsed the action of the party who hung him.”1
It was suspected that Crawford had given “fifty six-shooters” to the slaves.2
