Texas Troubles

10 Collin County

Plot Revealed

“White men, friends to the Abolition preachers Blunt and McKinney, who were expelled from the country last year, are the instigators of the plot. The whole plan is systematically arranged, and most ingeniously contrived. It makes the blood run cold to hear the details. The whole country is to be laid waste with fire, destroying all the ammunition, provisions, arms, etc. to get the country and in a state of helplessness, and then on the election day in August, there was to be a general insurrection, aided, aided and assisted by emissaries from the North, and persons friendly to them in our midst. Their sphere of operations is districted and sub-districted, giving to each division a close supervision by one energetic white man, who controls the negroes at his subordinates.

The danger seems to be general and imminent. Our citizens are on the alert, and it is hoped will redouble their vigilance. Public meetings have been held at Bonham, Paris, and other neighboring towns, and precautionary measures are adopted. We suggest that in every town, village and neighborhood, in all the surrounding counties, patrols of prudent, reliable citizens be at once appointed, and a rigorous search instituted of the persons and cabins of the negroes for concealed weapons, poisons, etc. We warn the people against over excitement.

Extract of a letter from Hays: ‘A free-soiler is now in your county of Travis. Look out. He is a shrewd, cunning fellow. He says he voted for Fremont, and is from New York.’”1
